The XC-540 line was introduced in 200609 as a high-speed 6-color print-cut machine. It replaced the SC-545EX as the high-throughput print-cut option. The XC uses a belt rather than the wire-drive which was current on the SC-545EX and 4-color SP print/cut models available at the time. The XC-540 had an extended 2-year warranty period. The XC also had an included take-up reel and an optional DU drying unit for high-speed printing.
Updates to the XC-540 since it's introduction have included:
- Intelligent Pass: introduced in 200801, the Intelligent Pass upgrade was a firmware and Versaworks upgrade for more efficient printing. It also required new media flanges. This now comes pre-installed on all new machines.
- White Ink Option: introduced in 200801, the white ink option allows users to switch to CMYK+W from the standard six-color roster.
- Metallic Ink Option: introduced in 200910, the metallic ink option allows users to switch to CMYK+M+W from the standard six-color roster.
